Psychological Testing Technician Registration

  • What is a Psychological Testing Technician Registration?

    Answer: The Psychological Testing Technician Registration is a new registration that allows the registrant to administer and score objective psychological or neuropsychological tests, as well as observe and describe the clients’ test behavior and test responses pursuant to Article 10 to the Psychological Practice Act, commencing with Business and Professions Code (BPC) section 2999.100.

  • I am an intern administering neuropsychological tests as part of my doctoral degree requirement. Would I need to register?

    Answer: Registration is not required if an individual is currently on a recognized path pursuant to the governing laws and regulations that authorize them to engage in psychological services under the supervision of a licensed psychologist as follows:

    • In a formal internship placement or postdoctoral training program that are overseen and approved by the American Psychological Association, the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, or the California Psychology Internship Council pursuant to the Business and Professions Code § 2911.
    • Enrolling in an internship required for a doctoral program as specified pursuant to the Business and Professions Code § 2911.
    • As an employee of an exempt setting pursuant to Business and Professions Code § 2910.
    • As a registered psychological associate pursuant to Business and Professions Code § 2913.
    • Granted a Waiver pursuant to the Welfare and Institutions Code § 5751.2.
  • Can I accrue supervised professional experience for licensure as a psychologist through a psychological testing technician registration?

    Answer: No. The psychological testing technician is not a valid pathway for licensure as a psychologist and does not enable a registrant to accrue experience towards psychologist licensure.

Application

  • How to register to become a psychological testing technician?

  • How to document the required training and education is being completed?

    Answer: Download the Psychological Testing Technician Training and Education Verification form and provide it to the licensed psychologist(s) or registered testing technician for completion. Each licensed psychologist is to complete a separate verification form. The applicant will need to upload and attach all completed verification form(s) as a single PDF file to to their online application.

    If electing to meet the minimum 20 hours of education on topics including law and ethics, confidentiality, and best practices for test administration and scoring by completing graduate-level coursework or continuing education (CE) courses as specified, provide an official transcript or certificates of completion for the CE courses as proof of completion. See instructions on how to submit official transcript(s) to the Board. The applicant will need to upload and attach all certificates of completion of CE courses as a single PDF file to their online application.

  • Who to contact for questions?

Training Requirement

  • The statute requires proof of completion of at least 40 hours of administering and scoring tests in the presence of a licensed psychology. Can this training be done remotely?

    Answer: No. This training is intended to be in-person.

  • The statute requires proof of completion of at least 20 hours of direct observation of a licensed psychologist administering and scoring test. Can this training be done remotely?

    Answer: No. This training is intended to be in-person.

  • Would watching a pre-recorded video count as “direct observation”?

    Answer: No. Direct observation is watching the interactions, processes, or behaviors as they occur.

  • Would watching a live video meet the “direct observation” training requirement?

    Answer: No. The training relating to direct observation is intended to be in-person.

  • Would a licensed psychologist watching a live video of an applicant administering and scoring tests meet the requirement of being “in presence of” as required by the statute?

    Answer: No. The training of administering and scoring tests is intended to be done in-person.

  • Can the required training occur in a private practice setting?

    Answer: Yes. The statute allows the required training to be obtained by doing any combination of the following:

    • Participating in individual or group instruction provided by a licensed psychologist.
    • Engaging in independent learning directed by a licensed psychologist.
    • Completing graduate-level coursework at a regionally accredited university, college, or professional school.
    • Taking continuing education courses from organizations with board approval pursuant to Section 2915.
  • Can an unregistered individual administer and score psychological and neuropsychological tests in the presence of a psychologist prior to being registered?

    Answer: Yes, when an individual is gaining the specified training and education required for a psychological testing technician registration, they are allowed to do so.

Educational Requirement

  • What is the degree requirement to apply for a Psychological Testing Technician registration?

    Answer: The statute requires an individual to possess a bachelor’s or graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, or be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at a regionally accredited institution, in 1. Psychology, or 2. Education specializing in educational psychology, counseling psychology or school psychology.

  • I have a degree in special education, would I qualify for a psychological testing technician registration?

    Answer: No. The statute specifies the qualifying degree must be in the following subjects: psychology or education with the field of specialization in educational psychology, counseling psychology, or school psychology.

  • I obtained a certificate in a program that is about a specific psychological test, but I do not have a qualifying degree. Would the certificate meet the educational requirement for a psychological testing technician registration?

    Answer: No. The statute requires a qualifying degree, or proof of current enrollment in a graduate program in the following subjects: psychology or education with the field of specialization in educational psychology, counseling psychology, or school psychology.

  • The statute allows the education and training to be obtained by participating in individual or group instruction provided by a licensed psychologist. Can this instruction be done remotely?

    Answer: It depends. The education on topics including law and ethics, confidentiality, and best practices for test administration and scoring can be done remotely; however, the training on direct observation of a licensed psychologist (or a registered psychological testing technician) administering and that for administering and scoring tests in the presence of a licensed psychologist are intended to be done in-person.

Supervisor

  • Who can be the supervisor of a psychological testing technician?

    Answer: A psychologist who is licensed by the Board.

  • I am already a registered psychological testing technician, but I need to change a supervisor, what do I need to do?
