1. What duties can a registered Research Psychoanalyst and a Registered Student Research Psychoanalyst perform?
Answer: A registered Research Psychoanalyst may engage in psychoanalysis as an adjunct to teaching, training, or research. Students who are currently enrolled in an approved psychoanalytic institution and are registered with the Board as a Student Research Psychoanalyst, may engage in psychoanalysis under supervision of a Research Psychoanalyst registered with the Board.
2. How long is my registration active?
Answer: Research Psychoanalyst and Student Research Psychoanalyst registrations are active for two years from the registration issuance date. Biennial renewal is required to maintain an active registration. Renewals can be completed online through BreEZe, or by mailing a renewal application form and a fee of $75.00.
3. Does a Student Research Psychoanalyst have to be supervised?
Answer: Yes. Supervision is required pursuant to California Code of Regulations (CCR) §1373 under the following conditions:
Supervisor qualifications:
- Must be a graduate psychoanalyst.
- Must have at least five years of postgraduate clinical experience in psychoanalysis after completing psychoanalytic education.
Supervision requirements
- Frequency:
- Must have at least five years of postgraduate clinical experience in psychoanalysis after completing psychoanalytic education.
- After first year: minimum of 1 hour per month per case.
- Capacity: Supervisors may only oversee as many students as the training institute judges can be effectively supervised.
Minimum hours of supervision
- At least 50 hours per case.
- A total of at least 150 hours of supervision during training.
4. What steps should I take if my psychoanalytic institution is not listed on the Board's list of approved psychoanalytical institutions?
Answer: You will need to submit an Application for Registration as a Research Psychoanalyst or Student Research Psychoanalyst and fee with the required supporting documents for further review. You may reference the CCR §1374 for reference.
